Mozart, W.A: Rondo from Horn Concerto in D
"Mozart's D Major Horn Concerto has always been known as the first of his four for the instrument. It was originally known as K412, but the Köchel number was altered to K386b when scholars decided that it was written in 1781. However, Dr Alan Tyson has recently discovered that it was, in fact, the last of the four concertos to be written, and that Mozart was working on it in 1791.
Although the finale remains incomplete at his death, Mozart left a substantial sketch of the movement, including the complete solo line, the first 40 or so bars of orchestration, and much of the first violin part. This sketch was used by Franz Süssmayr in 1792 as the basis for his rather free completion of the movement, and it is this version of the complete finale which has been played ever since.
