3. Fugue Nr. 20 BWV 865 from the Well Tempered Clavier by J. S. Bach arr. by Geoffrey Winter
Relatively unknown to his
contemporaries, Johann Sebastian Bach's (1685 - 1750) stature has grown
through time to the point that he has become a standard in the world of
music today. This has entirely to do with the deep spiritual
universality of his music. His compositions are considered as "pure"
music - that which stands entirely by itself and is not dependent on
such things as instrumental timbre. Precisely for this reason is Bach's
music such a popular subject as arrangements for different sorts of
instrumental ensembles.

Bizet/Turner: Carmen Suite
Carmen is probably the most popular opera of all times. It is the most
performed of all operas, with a universal appeal that transcends
cultures and generations. It has been the most filmed opera in history.
Written in 1874 and first perfromed in 1875, the year of Bizet's death,
it was harshly criticised and was not a success until after the
composer's death. Bizet's masterly use of orchestral color heightens
the dramatic pace and gives the whole opera an almost symphonic
quality. The melodies are often uncomplicated and extremely engaging.
Mr. Turner has captured all the charm and color of the original in this
arrangement for Horn Quartet. It is sure to please any audience as well
as the musicians who perform it. |

Brahms, J: 3 Choral Pieces
arranged by Kerry Turner
1. "Ach, arme Welt!" from Three Motets for mixed choir a cappella Op. 110 No. 2
2. "O Süsser Mai!" Op. 93a No. 3
3. "Im Herbst"
The rise of singing societies in Germany and France in the first
half of the 19th century stimulated the flourishing of part song
chorale writing: homophonic songs with the melody mainly in the upper
voice. Weber, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Gounod, and Liszt all
contributed to this style, writing accompanied and unaccompanied part
songs for men's, women's, and mixed voices. Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
was the undisputed master in this genre writing many songs for various
vocal combinations, very often unaccompanied. This album contains 3
short works originally for a cappella chorus, which show the harmonic
richness of Brahm's use of the human voice. For beginning to advanced
quartet. |

Mozart, W.A: Marriage of Figaro Overture arranged by Kerry Turner
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote his comic opera Le nozze di Figaro (The
Marriage of Figaro) in 1786, in the style of the prevailing Opera Buffa
of the late 18th century. However, in his genius, Mozart took the Opera
Buffa style a step further, adding real 3-dimensional depth to the
drama, not only in the characters as portrayed in the libretto but also
to the characters as portrayed in his music. The result is a lively,
amusing and beautiful masterpiece.
In his overture to the opera,
Mozart sets down in a few short minutes a crisp, sparkling musical gem
that not only sets the mood for the opera that follows, but has
inspired symphonic music lovers for over 200 years. |

Shafer, M: Chaste Fugue
A Quartet in classic Fugue style
The title "Chaste Fugue" has nothing to do with morality, but is a play on the words "cor de chasse", the original French name for the horn. Also, in Latin, the word "fuga" refers to "flight" or "chase". My thought was that the motif of the fugue seemed somehow reminiscent of early hunting calls. There is also a reference in the coda to another famous chase, clearly documented over the years in a well known nursery rhyme.

The Fripperies are short, light-hearted pieces, intended to give the horn quartet the opportunity to play in different styles. They were originally written to give my students the chance to become at least somewhat acquainted with the notation employed in "big band" writing. |

Turner, K: Fandango
Fandango
is an impressionistsic tone poem, written in November 1995 for the
American Horn Quartet. It was the wish of Mr. Turner to express a
passionate Spanish dance in the tradition of Maurice Ravel's La Valse
and Bolero. At the same time he wanted to show case the particular
virtuosity of the American Horn Quartet, who premiered the piece in
Kerrville, Texas at a concert on April 14th, 1996.
Mr Turner explains the piece as follows:
At
the opening of the piece we behold a solitary red cloak, lying
motionless on the floor. A very slight breeze glides over the cloak,
causing small ripples to form. Suddenly a magic wind blows over the
cloak causing it to rise and fall and eventually transform itself into
a Spanish dancer. He (or she) is tall and proud, clothed in the
spectacular costume particular to the dancers of Spain. We imagine a
toreador or a flamenco dancer, and possibly even images from the tango
or bolero. In short, it is a colourful impressionistic representation
of many famous Spanish dances. The dance reaches a climax, and the
closing bars pound out the fandango rhythm in an almost frenzied
fashion. At the very end, the magic spell suddenly departs, and the
cloak falls lifeless to the ground.

Turner/Winter: French Impressionists Book 2
1. "Pavane pour une Infante défunte" by Maruice Ravel arranged by Kerry Turner
2. "Tarantelle Styrienne" by Claude Debussy arranged by Geoffrey Winter
Claude Debussy (1862-1918) was the foremost of the French
Impressionistic composers. His innovative use of harmony, rhythm and
melody as colour had great influence over most of the major composers
of the early 20th century, not only in France but in the rest of world
as well.
Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), though greatly influenced by
Debussy, retreated from the indistinctness of Debussy's use of melody,
harmony, rhythm and structure, choosing for more functionalism in all
of his compositional devices. His superb feel for and use of colour,
and his conceptual use of "moods" and "atmospheres" ties him
irrevocably to the French Impressionistic Period.
Ravel's Pavane
pour une Infante défunte is a good example of this - a piece written
with a suggestive title as in much of Debussy's music, but containing
much clearer and longer melodic and harmonic lines. Composed for piano
in 1899, Ravel exploited the rich inherent timbres by setting it for
orchestra in 1910. Also originally composed for piano, Debussy's
Tarantelle Styrienne gently plays with the ambiguity of the 3/4 and 6/8
meters. It was republished in 1903 as "Danse". |

Turner, K: Quartet No.1
Composed in the summer of 1987, this piece won First Prize in the
International Horn Society Composition Contest. This work was
originally meant to fill a gap in the horn quartet lierature: a 20th
century style piece that could be easily understood by the audience,
but would prove challenging technically amd musically for the
performers. |

Turner, K: Quartet No.3
The Quartet No. 3 for Horn Quartet was written in the summer of 1992.
It was designed to be the main work of any horn quartet concert. Other
than the quartets by Paul Hindemith, Michael Tippett and Kerry Turner,
there is a defnite need for major, multi-movement works in the quartet
repertoire. In order to avoid taxing one solo player against 3
accompanying players, the composer preferred to render all voices
absolutely equal, each voice being equally virtuose, solistic, and
melodic.
There are 4 movements: The Sooners, The Homesteadrs, the Ghost Town
Parade, and Finale. Each movement's title is merely an accurate
description of what the composer had in mind while composing, and is
not meant to have a story or programmatic idée-fixe, although it is
rather clear that the composer's thoughts are in the American West
sometime in the 19th century.
The Quartet No. 3 spans nearly 4 octaves. |

Turner, K: Rule Britannia!
Theme and Variations for Horn Quartet
Rule
Britannia! for Horn Quartet was composed in December of 2002. The work
was intended to be a show piece for the American Horn Quartet, who
premiered it at the International Horn Society's 35th International
Horn Symposium in Bloomington, Indiana. Set in a theme and variations
format, this piece, as with other horn quartet works by the composer,
runs the gamut of all technical possibilities of four horns in an
ensemble.
The
theme of Rule Britannia! has long been a favorite of Mr. Turner, who
has always considered the melody to be rich in potential for
variations. Indeed, it was upon hearing another set of variations on
the theme at the "Last Night at the Proms" concert, performed by the
BBC Symphony at Royal Albert Hall in London, that the composer first
toyed with the idea of creating his own set of variations. After an
initial and straight forward rendition of the theme, a fortissimo
upward glissando of a 9th launches the listener into Variation 1,
which is tempestuous and colorful in character. Variation 2 is played
by the alto voice in horn 2, accompanied by the other horns with mutes.
In Variation 3, a gust of chromaticism encircles the theme, and by the
time we reach Variation 4, which is the longest and most developed of
the variations, the theme has transformed into a lyrical melody. There
is a fugal bridge section which leads to Variation 5 and to the written
key of Bb, which is the ideal key for the extreme virtuosity of this
closing section.
Rule Britannia! Can be considered the 4th work in
a line of similar works for horns (Farewell to Red Castle, Barbara
Allen and Ghosts of Dublin) which have been recorded by the American
Horn Quartet and the Horns of the New York Philharmonic.
